Obituary for Helen M. Szumski

December 15, 1914 - December 16, 2017
Newington, Connecticut | Age 103

Beloved Aunt Helen

Helen M. Szumski, of Newington, died peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, one day after her 103rd birthday. Born in New Britain, daughter of the late Adolf and Maria (Tomaszewski) Szumski, she was a New Britain resident until moving to Cedar Mountain Commons in Newington six years ago. After more than 33 years of employment, Ms. Szumski retired as chief of operations from the CT Department of Labor. She was a real trailblazer for women executives as she continued to excel throughout the years. A member of Holy Cross Church, she was also a member of the Parish Council and had the privilege of dining with the future Pope John Paul II, when he was a Cardinal. Active in the Cedar Mountain community, she will be missed as a sharp Bingo champion. She was a great cook and baker, and created exquisite works of needlepoint, knitting and sewing. Lovingly referred to as "Aunt Helen", she leaves her cousins and their families, especially her devoted cousin Heidi Salvucci and her husband Tony, and their family of Wellesley, MA. She also leaves very dear friends, Joseph M. Roman of New Britain, Michael and Karen Roman of Vienna, VA, John and Janet Roman of Kensington, and Joseph and Kathleen Roman of Enfield, and their families; two Godchildren, Thomas Boccia of New Britain and Elspeth Dailey of Allison Park, PA. She was pre-deceased by her brother Thaddeus J. "Ted" Szumski. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Burritt Hill Funeral Home, 332 Burritt St., New Britain. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, New Britain. She will be laid to rest with her parents and her brother in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Britain. Helen faithfully watched the Catholic mass on television daily, therefore memorial donations may be made to the Office of Radio and Television of the Archdiocese of Hartford, 15 Peach Orchard Rd., Prospect, CT 06712.
