Tribute & Message From The Family

Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend

Vincent Michael Guertin, 74, of Wethersfield, formerly of Newington, died Wednesday, May 9, 2018, after a short illness. He was loved and surrounded by family, including his wife of just one year, Vicki. Michael was born in Hartford on October 12, 1943, to the late Eileen (O'Connell) and Lucien Vincent Guertin and raised in Hartford and West Hartford. He attended St. Joseph Cathedral Grammar School, Holy Trinity High School and University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, where he was a member (and chaplain) of Alpha Zeta Omega and earned a degree in pharmacology in 1966. His college internship at Newington Children's Hospital led to a career and he spent nearly 30 years there as Director of Pharmacy. When he retired from Newington Children's Hospital, he went on to work in the pharmacy departments of several local hospitals, including Bristol Hospital, Southington Hospital and the Veteran's Home & Hospital in Rocky Hill. He met the first love of his life, Cynthia Corto, while participating in a high school Junior Achievement program, and married her on October 14, 1967. Together they raised four children in Newington. They were both active at Holy Spirit Church, where Mike was a lecturer and Cindy a CCD teacher. They enjoyed meeting other couples through the church's Marriage Encounter program. After Cynthia's death in 2003, Michael threw himself into maintaining relationships with family and friends. He never turned down an invitation to visit or celebrate with loved ones, and he became part of the Catholic Worker House community in Hartford. He loved to share a good meal, an unusual beverage, and a corny joke with those he loved. He absolutely adored babies, none more than the seven grandchildren who called him Dziadz – Amber, Samantha, Adelle, Alden, Vincent, Angelo and Chloe. In 2016 Michael found new love with an old friend when they re-connected at a high school reunion. He and Vicki Barrison were married May 6, 2017 in a ceremony filled with joy and hope for the future. Though their time together was short, Vicki was devoted to Michael's well-being and happiness. In addition to Vicki and his beloved grandchildren, Michael leaves three daughters and a son, and their families, Kristen and Jim MacDowell of Johnson, VT, Tara Guertin of Newington, Stacy and Tom Leone of Manchester, Adam and Emily Guertin of Hartford; his brother Phil and wife June of East Haddam, and a large extended family and circle of good friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 15th, at 10:30 a.m. directly at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 183 Church St., Newington. Interment will be in West Meadow Cemetery, Newington. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Newington Memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults to support Amber Rehberg's fundraising efforts online at or by mail at The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, 4K for Cancer – Amber Rehberg, 1215 East Fort Avenue, Ste. 104, Baltimore, MD 21230.
